Established in 2001, the Dot NAME top-level domain name extension is the only one meant for personal sites only. These domain names can be personal or fictional names, aliases and/or other titles people are known by. At the beginning, solely 3rd-level registrations were possible, so if you wished to book john.doe.name, you were supposed to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration procedures were loosened and 2nd-level registrations were also allowed. Already acquired 3rd-level domains remained online.
